Did You Know Chiros Can Give Lifestyle Advice (Ex. Diet) - Which Can Help Your Pain and Injury

If you read my previous blog “The Health Factors Affecting Your Pain and Injury Recovery” (if you haven’t you can click here) - hopefully you learned that pain is more than just pure mechanics. And it includes factors such as diet/nutrition, sleep and stress which can play an impact on how we perceive pain.

And patient education plays a huge role in how I practice. Because the more you understand what's going on in your body (and what influences it), the more empowered you are to make changes that actually help you feel and move better.

So let’s talk a bit more about diet and nutrition — and why I bring it up even when someone comes in with a sore knee or a tight back.

A lot of musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions — especially in athletes — actually benefit from a well-rounded, nutritious diet. We’re talking high in protein (to support tissue repair and recovery) and low in inflammatory foods, like ultra-processed snacks and sugary drinks. Basically, the stuff that tastes great in the moment but doesn’t do your body many favours in the long run.

Why does this matter? Because poor nutrition can slow down healing, affect energy levels, and even increase your sensitivity to pain. In some cases, a highly inflammatory diet can actually trigger or worsen certain conditions. And if someone’s managing a chronic issue like diabetes, it can further complicate the picture — making it harder to recover from injuries or manage pain effectively.

This is why nutrition is never just a side note in rehab. It’s part of the bigger picture. And while you don’t need to be perfect (I’m definitely not saying goodbye to pizza nights), small, consistent changes really do add up.
