01 LOW BACK TREATMENT
Receive Expert Movement Based Care
Low back pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints in active people — but common doesn't mean it should be managed with rest, heat packs, and a generic exercise sheet.
Whether you're dealing with a sudden disc injury from lifting, recurring lumbar stiffness from years of sport, or chronic non-specific pain that's been mismanaged for months, the path back to full capacity requires more than symptom relief.
At Pinnacle Rehab and Performance, low back pain treatment is structured around ONE GOAL: returning you to your sport, training, or daily activity at full strength — not just pain-free.
02 HOW IT WORKS
Our Approach to Low Back Rehab/Treatment
We don't manage low back pain in isolation. The lumbar spine functions within a system — the hips, pelvis, thoracic spine, and lower limbs all contribute to how load is distributed through the back. Our assessment process identifies where that system is breaking down, not just where it's painful.
The Four Phases
01
Pain Reduction
Manual therapy, soft tissue work, and load modification to reduce irritability and restore basic movement
02
Restore Movement
Targeted mobility work for the lumbar spine, hips, and thoracic spine, combined with initial motor control exercises to re-establish movement quality
03
Strength and Endurance
Progressive loading through compound and sport-specific movements — deadlifts, carries, lunges — building genuine spinal capacity, not just pain-free range
04
Return to Activity
Sport-specific loading, training integration, and criteria-based discharge — you leave with the strength and capacity to stay injury-free
03 HOW IS IT DIFFERENT
Most low back pain management stops at Phase 1 or 2 — you feel better, and sessions end. The problem is that "feeling better" and "being ready to train" are not the same thing. Recurrence rates for low back pain in athletes are high precisely because the underlying load deficit is never addressed.
At Pinnacle Rehab and Performance, sessions are 60 minutes, 1-on-1, with the same clinician. You get a structured program with clear milestones delivered via our training app (TrainHeroic), and your return-to-sport goals are built into the plan from day one — not added as an afterthought.

-
Low back pain in athletes and active individuals is rarely a single-structure problem. Pain at the lumbar spine often reflects a combination of load management issues, movement deficits, and strength imbalances across the lumbopelvic region — not just a "bad disc" or a "tight muscle."
It also has to consider everyone’s lifestyle factors (ex. beliefs around pain, diet, stress, sleep)
-
Recovery time varies depending on the diagnosis, severity, and how long the issue has been present. Acute presentations (disc injuries, sprains) often improve significantly within 4–8 weeks with appropriate management. Chronic low back pain may take 3–6 months of progressive loading to achieve full capacity. Most clients attend 1–2 sessions per week in the early stages, reducing as strength and independence build.
-
A sports chiropractor has training and experience focused on musculoskeletal injuries in active individuals and athletes. At Pinnacle Rehab and Performance, this is combined with a strength and conditioning background — meaning rehabilitation is performance-integrated from day one, not just pain management. Sessions focus on load, movement quality, and sport-specific capacity, not passive treatment alone.
-
The key difference is the integration of clinical and evidence-based chiropractic care with a genuine strength and conditioning background — and the structure of sessions.
Every appointment is 60 minutes, 1-on-1, with the same clinician. Rehabilitation is structured across clear phases with objective milestones, with the goal of full return to sport and performance — not just pain relief.
-
For most presentations, continued movement — at an appropriate load — produces better outcomes than rest. Complete rest is rarely indicated and often worsens long-term function. The goal is to find movements and loads that are tolerable and progressively build from there. Your clinician will guide exactly what's safe to keep doing during recovery.
We also treat shoulder injuries including rotator cuff strains and impingement.
-
Yes. Lumbar disc herniations are one of the most common presentations we manage. Conservative management — including manual therapy, motor control exercise, and progressive loading — is effective for the majority of disc-related presentations and is the recommended first-line approach before considering surgical options. Severe neurological symptoms (weakness, bladder or bowel changes) require urgent medical review.
-
Not necessarily. Imaging findings often don't correlate well with pain or function — many people with significant disc findings on MRI have no symptoms, and many people in significant pain have normal imaging. A thorough clinical assessment is usually sufficient to guide management. If imaging is indicated, your clinician will advise you accordingly.
-
Yes — this is our primary focus. We work with athletes and active individuals whose primary goal is getting back to training, competition, or physical activity at full capacity. Rehab is performance-integrated from session one, not added at the end.
-
Yes. Online rehab consultations are available for those outside Melbourne or who prefer remote access.
Online sessions include full assessment, program design, and ongoing coaching support via the TrainHeroic app.
These are available across Australia and around the world.
